“Before pursuing my path as an artist, I was a public interest attorney, working for a non-profit where I provided free legal services for those most in need. I assisted with defending wrongful evictions and foreclosures, clearing up title to property, and estate planning. In my practice, I know first hand the sacrifices and dedication that is required to serve those most in need. I am so very proud to be able to use my art, to further the principals and purpose of social, racial, and economic justice and equality by supporting University of Houston’s Graduate College of Social Work.” - AVM Hawkins

“Energy of Humanity” is an original painting inspired by, specially created for, and donated to the University of Houston’s Graduate College of Social Work, where 100% of the proceeds raised were donated to the college. It is AVM Hawkins’ deepest hope and prayer to be able to raise significant funds for the benefit of passionate, service-oriented students, who dedicate their lives, while incurring thousands of dollars in debt, to do the work, that many would not. The original painting was raffled to successfully raise over $15,000 to be used as scholarships to provide financial support to UH Graduate College of Social Work Students. In addition, to further these efforts, AVM produced a limited edition of 50 prints, signed and numbered, where an astonishing, 50% of proceeds shall go to UH Graduate College of Social Work.

“Energy of Humanity”is inspired by Andy Warhol’s iconic Marylin Monroe Pop Art. AVM wanted to create her own unique expression of the Warhol’s ideal of taking normal, everyday images of well-known figures, and transforming the image into a colorful, vibrant work of art. AVM wanted to embark on a similar journey, but by painting individuals whose images represent the tenets of social work. “Energy of Humanity”incorporates some of the greatest revolutionaries for social justice, equality, and human rights. “Energy of Humanity” includes individuals who have made a great impact, using their voice, gifts, power, energy and influence for the empowerment and betterment of all people. The motion, colors, and patterns radiating from each individual, symbolize each of their own personal energy. The individuals in the painting include: Mahatma Ghandi, Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King, Jr., Angela Davis, Cesar Chavez, Oprah Winfrey, James Baldwin, and Gloria Steinem. It is AVM’s intention that “Energy of Humanity”inspires the viewer to utilize his or her own unique energy, gifts, talents, and personality in service to humanity.
