Sentience and My Process for Creating
I named the exhibition, “Sentience” because it is how I would describe my abstract expressionistic work.
The process of creating is being sentient—aware of my inner world—how I’m feeling, what I’m thinking, while physically processing how the world, people and everyday life affect me.
I physically process thoughts through painting.
However, paining does not always involve brushstrokes…
Sometimes it involves scraping, sanding, gluing, attaching materials and texture, color and marks, through the use of movement and force from my body.
Each action spurns from an inspired thought or a persistent impulse that I honor.
The canvas is the recipient of this moving energy, absorbing my emotions, and codifying my thoughts into physical form.
What results from this process is always a genuine surprise to me.
I must admit my unknowing.
Painting is very similar to life.
Yes, I am in control, but not in complete control of everything.
Yes, I make decisions. Yes, this life, this work belongs to me; and yet, it doesn’t.
The fact that there are infinite words to describe how art and the creative process makes me feel, is what brings me joy—that this journey never has to end.
I can keep on going, for as long as I breathe.
This is what makes me an artist.
This is what makes me human.
