Blooming in Her Season - Houston Methodist Hospital Foundation's Women's Mental Health Luncheon

Last Thursday, as a prelude to Mother’s Day, I had the honor to paint live at Houston Methodist Hospital Foundation’s Luncheon, “Blooming in Her Season: Celebrating Women and the Journey to Holistic Care” at Ouisie’s Table.

The event celebrated generations of women connected through motherhood, bringing them together to learn about Houston Methodist’s holistic approach to perinatal mental health care.

The luncheon highlighted how early intervention and expanded access to personalized, compassionate care can nurture lasting emotional wellbeing and create transformative outcomes for generations to come.

During the reception, there was an interactive activity where the guests answered prompts related to perinatal mental health while enjoying hors d’oeuvres on the patio.

Each answer corresponded to a colored rose petal, that would be placed into a vase—the vase representing the collective experience of the women present.

Once the luncheon began, I was presented the vases and began painting an original work, incorporating the colors from the vases as inspiration.

Each prompt contained a related, startling statistic, such as, “1 in 5 mothers are impacted by mental health conditions during pregnancy and postpartum;” while also, “40% of women with postpartum symptoms do not seek help due to stigma, guilt, shame or misunderstanding.”

The luncheon was enlightening and empowering, where the keynote speaker, as well as women in the audience shared their personal experiences with perinatal mental health.

To conclude the event, my presence, purpose, and painting was revealed to everyone, codifying everyone’s shared stories—reminding us, that we are not alone, while also showing what we can accomplish together.

It was an absolute pleasure to help bring this activation to life.

I am truly grateful for the opportunity.
